Journey

Aspects of travel and tourism in their historical, cultural, economic and sociological dimensions.

  • The Egg Monastery

Greece, like so many other countries, is dotted with unusual places that are well worth a visit. These include natural sites—often steeped in history and memory. Among the most remarkable of these is the Monastery of Saint Demetrius also known as Moní Avgoú, literally “the Monastery of the Egg”, located in the Argolis region, in the northeastern Peloponnese.

  • Kalarrýtes, village in Epirus

In Greek, Epirus primarily means “mainland.” But to the Hellenes, the term more specifically evokes their vast, mountainous region—a territory that, since ancient times, has proudly occupied the western slopes of the Pindus mountain range, extending down to the Ionian Sea. Italy lies just across the way, in a sense.

  • Bridges and Roads

In western Thessaly, not far from the famous Meteora, lies the village of Sarakína and its historic bridge of the same name, which spans the bed of the Piniós River. In the past, this bridge served as a transit point for travel toward the settlements of the Aspropótamos region—nestled in the Pindus mountain range, between Thessaly and the neighboring region of Epirus. “The grandeur of the multi-arched bridge, combined with the massive rock formation nearby, commands the visitor’s attention,” state promotional materials for tourists issued by local authorities. Or rather, it *used* to command it.

  • Code Name: HEW/LGAT

The memory of a country is sometimes linked to the reputation of its airports… even abandoned ones. From a childhood shared between Athens and Thessaly, I will always remember the attraction exerted on us by the site of Ellinikó, in other words, the historic airport of Athens, known by the international code: HEW/LGAT.By chance we were living at the time in the Heliopolis district and the rue… of Thessalie, beautiful… location I must say, under Mount Hymettus, exactly opposite the airport, the sea before our eyes.Heliopolis, not from Egypt but from the great Athenian East. Childhood dreams.

  • Tríkala, city… not alienated!

We think we know Greece like the back of our hand. Yet the country—an Acropolis of a certain Europe—still holds many secrets from us. Take, for instance, Western Thessaly—the region I come from—and more specifically Trikala, the administrative center of the province of the same name. It lies in the heart of Hellas, serving as a gateway to Northern Greece for those traveling up from Athens, well past Delphi.
